In 1990, Stannie won First Place for Excellence in Journalism from the Society of Professional Journalists' Kansas City Press Club, in the Major Metro Dailies category.

A Side Note: Although Stannie's submission was errantly entered into the Major Metro Dailies category (the Capital-Journal was not a large enough newspaper for this extremely competitive category), she won anyway.

In July 1983, Stannie was recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for writing a series of articles on hard-to-adopt children.
