In 1990, Stannie won First Place for Excellence in Journalism from the Society of Professional Journalists' Kansas City Press Club, in the Major Metro Dailies category.

A Side Note: Although Stannie's submission was errantly entered into the Major Metro Dailies category (the Capital-Journal was not a large enough newspaper for this extremely competitive category), she won anyway.
